After its visit last September 16-17, 2009, the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) granted re-accreditation status to the College of Business Administration (CBA) and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and the eligibility of the College of Education to apply for a formal survey. The PAASCU Board of Directors announced the successful accreditation of the collegiate department of Letran through a fax message which was sent to the Office of the Rector and President last December 4, 2009.
The PAASCU Board has granted re-accreditation status to the CBAA and CLAS for a period of five years, which is valid until December 2014.
The granting of re-accreditation to the collegiate department is a proof that Letran has indeed met the common standards of quality or excellence set by PAASCU. Among the areas surveyed during the visit were college/school community involvement, faculty, instruction, library, laboratories, physical plant, student services and administration.
Accreditation is a concept based on self-regulation which focuses on evaluation and the continuing improvement of educational quality. PAASCU gave much emphasis on the school’s purposes and objectives. Through this, PAASCU assesses and evaluates the school according to its stated purposes and objectives. Accreditation is not granted through comparison with the standards of other schools but primarily by the degree to which the school’s objectives are match with current practice in various areas.
The Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities aims to, among others, identify educational institutions which meet or exceed stated criteria of educational quality. It also aims to stimulate and integrate the efforts of institutions to elevate the standards of education in the Philippines. PAASCU also provides assistance and consultancy services to institutions and its programs needing improvement.
In the December 9 communication of the Rector and President, Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. to the Letran community, he expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the stakeholders for their untiring support and dedication in order for the Colegio to attain its accreditation status. Particularly, Fr. Lana mentioned that this accreditation status “proved the communal desire of the Letran community for academic excellence.”
